1. Alte Nickolaischule

Alte Nickolaischule used to be a secondary school dedicated to St. Nicholas, dating back to the 12th century. The impressive size of the new Renaissance building is due to the rebuilding of the entire structure after a massive fire in the 16th century. Nowadays, the protected spot hosts a restaurant within its grandiose auditorium. The menu is concentrated on the region of Saxony’s recipes, like potato dumplings with asparagus and the local beer, Radeberger.

2. Zills Tunnel

A historical restaurant residing in an 18th-century house that was restored according to the finesse of the time, Zills Tunnel is a delightful place to start the night. Located on the corner of Klosterstrasse, the alley that goes to the center of the city, this impressive Altbau has masonry walls and beamed ceilings. The menu touts the likes of beef fillet stroganoff and the Schöfferhofer Grape beer.

3. Ratskeller

A spectacular and traditional restaurant, Ratskeller is a Middle Ages wine and beer cellar with incredible aesthetics and authentic design. It is spread over seven chambers where the sculpted chairs align at long tables and the vaulted ceilings are hand-painted with the city’s beloved surroundings. The joint serves dishes like potato soup and fried lamb hip, sided by beans, smoked bacon and creamy polenta.

4. Chinabrenner

Chinabrenner is a high-class Chinese restaurant residing in a re-purposed brick industrial hall, which serves specialized cuisine from the western province of Sichuan. A delightful interior design, the combination of wide windows, simple ceilings and pillars with classic wooden furniture and traditional Chinese fairy lights make for a great spot to eat at. The cuisine is stunning, with dishes like cold noodles and beef with coriander on the card.

5. Umaii

Modern and simplistic Umaii is a Japanese restaurant in Leipzig that brings the tradition of homemade noodles to town. The traditional restaurant serves a special type of locally made noodles that are called ramen. They are presented as a dish of noodles with fresh vegetables, meat, fish or tofu, served with broth, herbs and various flavors. Watch out for the kokos ramen dumplings with ginger that are delicious but very spicy.

6. Drogerie

Drogerie offers exquisite services and an original setting in a reused historical drugstore. The current setting of the restaurant used to be an impressive 19th-century chemist that operated until the 1930s.The 40-seat restaurant now has delightful low lighting and is filled with specially carved furniture dating from the period of the drugstore itself. Exquisite food like veal fillet wrapped in Parma ham is served, accompanied by fine parley liquor.

7. Max Enk

The cosmopolitan atmosphere of Max Enk is part of the restaurant’s high-class allure. The place is designed in line with cool aesthetics and gourmet tastes alike. The former 19th-century exhibition courtyard it houses is now a modern, sculpted venue with all glass ceilings and wooden furniture. On the table, the meals go from fillet of Arctic char, sided by pasta in nutty butter to fine wines, like the 2011 Limoux blanc Les Bénédictins.

8. Villers

Residing in a neo-classical building, Villers belongs to one of the oldest families in Leipzig and brings a menu of haute cuisine and refinement. The salon represents the highlight of the restaurant. It is decorated with style and grace and completely illuminated by lights and windows that look out to a gorgeous fountain. The menu is conceived to augment the taste of each ingredient. Choose from the set of four to seven courses, going from scallops to pork belly with pike caviar. Nice.

9. Mein Leipzig

Mein Leipzig is a classic restaurant in a vaulted cellar with elegant ambience and a distinct European kitchen. Located in Käthe-Kollwitz-Straßem, right near the Chanel Elstermühlgraben and Johannapark, the restaurant has a classy living room interior with candle light and massive wooden furniture. On the menu there is a seasonal dish offering, like lobster and fish assortments, as well as grilled specialities of pork and beef.
