There are a huge number of good bars and pubs in Budapest’s VII district, and it is worth visiting at least one ‘ruin pub.’ Street food, pubs, kosher shops, trendy hotels and exhibitions – the VII District of Budapest is true cultural hub. Here is a quick guide to the best bars in the area.

Szimpla Kert is very well-known and popular, and a must-visit if you are in Budapest. Originally a factory, the place was converted into an open-air cinema and pub, which serves as a unique setting for concerts, theater shows and exhibitions. Seats are converted from various things like old car trunks, and the whole place radiates a slight hint of madness when you enter. All-in-all, a great place to hang out.

Surprisingly, in Warm Up Bar you won’t get a list of cocktails or drinks – the barmen will prepare the desired drink based upon your favorite flavors, scents or historical scene, a unique approach which makes this place a must-try if you are in Budapest. You will also experience a nice environment and very friendly service.

This recently opened wine bar is the perfect place for people who like to drink Hungarian or Italian wine in a beautifully decorated pub, without being surrounded by a crowd but yet close to all the party places. If you happen to be hungry, you can order dishes such as grilled goat’s cheese with carrots. Should any of the wines win you over, there is the chance to buy a whole bottle at the counter.

You will know when you’ve arrived at Platós. There is a three-wheeled, blue Ape flatbed moped right out front which makes this place impossible to miss. This small pub offers a wide variety of handmade beers and good pasta. If desired, the Ape moped can function as a terrace. Sometimes, live music and concerts liven up the proceedings.

Almost resembling a “ruin pub”, this place has a unique atmosphere and offers a selection of good quality wines. There is also a great range of handmade beers, even diabetic and gluten-free versions.
