The 10 Best Burger Joints In New Orleans

Shay Lee

Although they aren’t quite as popular as the museums, jazz festivals, concerts, and Mardi Gras, the burger bars in New Orleans offer some top quality chow. We list some of the best places to grab a great burger in the capital of jazz music.

1. Port of Call

Restaurant, Bar, Steakhouse

Port of Call welcomes all visitors to enjoy wonderful steaks and burgers. A fun fact about the restaurant is that it wasn’t always a burger place. Originally, the restaurant was a steakhouse that only opened in the evenings. Port of Call was small, quiet, and provided an intimate setting for its customers. Currently, it is an extremely popular burger restaurant (try the mushroom cheeseburger) that serves lunch and dinner daily. Zagat’s Surveys voted their burgers the best in New Orleans. The burgers here are half pound and they are ground fresh daily.

2. The Company Burger

Restaurant, American, Pub Grub

The Company Burger are specialists in the classic American cheeseburger, which uses five ounces of meat cooked upon request. The meat patties in the double cheeseburgers use six ounces of meat. All burger patties are made with beef, and Creekstrone Farms sources all their beef, all hormone and antibiotic-free. Since the Company Burger believes in serving fresh food, they make their own mayonnaise and pickles, with ingredients grown in a local garden. The bread used in the restaurant is made fresh each day, and the French fries are hand-cut and double fried.

3. Charcoal's Gourmet Burger Bar

Restaurant, American

Charcoal’s Gourmet Burger Bar serves premium quality burgers made to order, with buns freshly made daily. Each burger is topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese or other topping requested. For bacon lovers, there are burgers with loads of bacon. As they enjoy the tender burgers, guests can sit at the bar or on a balcony which overlooks the dining room, where dimmed lights allow for a relaxed ambience.

5. Ted’s Frostop Diner

Restaurant, American

Ted’s Frostop Diner serves tender, juicy burgers on po’ boy bread. The burgers are topped with mayonnaise, mustard, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. Cheese isn’t added unless it is requested. Other than being a popular burger spot, the restaurant is famous for its root beer, served in a chilled mug and enjoyed while playing the free games on offer. In addition, there are root beer floats for children.

6. Bayou Burger and Sports Company

Bar, American

Bayou Burger and Sports Company combines local Southern cuisine, and quality ingredients, with signature dishes that include the Gator Burger and Skillet Cheese Fries. The Gator Burger is homemade alligator with coleslaw, pickled onions, and mayonnaise served on a brioche bun. Or try the Bayou Trifecta a jambalaya that has red beans, rice, chicken, and/or crawfish.

7. Smashburger

Restaurant, American, Fast Food

Although there are plenty of restaurants serving amazing burgers in New Orleans, Smashburger aims to connect with the city’s passion for burgers by providing a space where beef patties are “smashed” fresh and served delicious. The burgers here are always made to order, never frozen, and seared on the grill. For those who do not like meat, they have vegetarian options as well.

8. Clover Grill

Diner, American

Clover Grill has been open since 1939 and visitors can still start their day with regular breakfast or a 20-ounce beer since the restaurant is open 24 hours. Since New Orleans is constantly buzzing with action, Clover Grill thought it best to stay open in order to ensure people can get food at all times. This is a popular place in the city; the laid-back atmosphere and the good, hot burgers keep guests coming back for more. The diner can be recognized by the washed plaster exterior, brightly painted, and the glass-paneled doors.

9. New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Co.

Restaurant, American, Seafood

New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Co. (NOHSC) serves traditional dishes foodies love to eat. Great hamburgers are served daily, made with fresh ingredients and 100% grain fed beef. Moreover, food isn’t the only thing they do well; the restaurant’s Southern hospitality and charm are amazing.

10. Bud's Broiler

Diner, Restaurant, American, Fast Food

Bud’s Broiler‘s history can be traced to 1952, when Alfred ‘Bud’ Saunders came to New Orleans from Austin, Texas. In the early stages of the restaurant, he offered a limited menu which consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, and pies. To give the burgers season, he created a special Hickory Smoke Sauce that is currently used in all the burgers. Bud’s Broiler’s philosophy is ‘high quality meat and glowing charcoal makes the difference’. This is what the restaurant is proud to serve.
