The Outer Banks, barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, are a wonderful place to drop anchor with your dog. If days spent relaxing in the sand and fishing off the pier sound fun to you, imagine how spectacular it’ll be for your pooch. Whether you’re hanging out on Nags Head or bumming around Roanoke Island, these pet-friendly hotels will set tails wagging, and they’re bookable on Culture Trip.

1. White Doe Inn

This pet-friendly hotel should be called the White Dog Inn, as it offers complimentary pet beds, pick-up bags, toys, bowls and treats. Your twin corgis will love curling up together beside the gas fireplace in the garden room while you snooze in the brass canopied king bed. There’s a cast-iron jetted tub for adult R&R time, too. As for the twins, drive to the Roanoke Island Dog Park for some off-leash fun.

2. The Roanoke Island Inn

Your and your bull terrier will shake your tails at your private bungalow at the Roanoke Island Inn. This cottage in a private garden has a wet bar for relaxation, and you’re always welcome to sneak over to the main house and raid the innkeeper’s pantry day or night. Barkley will dig the salty sea air and walks along the bay, especially when you slide into Avenue Waterfront Grille for a break and some beer-battered onion rings.

3. Hatteras Sands Campground

Resort, Camping

Whether you choose a cabin, cottage or camper, pets are always welcome at Hatteras Sands Campground. You and your pup can mix and mingle with the other humans and dogs by fishing, crabbing and shooting the breeze along the canals. No matter how great your pup’s doggie paddle is, only leash holders can enjoy the Olympic-size swimming pool and clubhouse with ping-pong and video games. However, Fido will have a grand enough time romping around this large, open campground.

4. Dolphin Oceanfront Motel

Dolphin Oceanfront Motel is just steps from the sand, so your dachshund can dig holes to its heart’s delight. You can fish off Jennette’s Pier or the dock at Harvey Soundside Park if you don’t mind a quick walk. If your dog wants a place of its own to lounge about, the Nags Head Dog Park is a 10-minute drive up the northern end of the island.

5. Breakwater Inn

Your seafaring dog will find a safe haven at the Breakwater Inn’s Fisherman’s Quarters. These ground-floor, pet-friendly rooms are close to the marina, where you can charter a fishing boat. If you and Skipper don’t fancy a trip, cruise the island on four wheels, and eat your way through fish tacos and fries at dog-friendly restaurants, including the Froggy Dog, the Wreck Tiki Bar and Dinky’s Waterfront Restaurant.

6. Tar Heel Motel

Be it children or dogs that are drooling, yelping and making a mess of your backseat, they’ll all have a good time as soon as you pull up to this pet-friendly motel in Nags Head. Your kids will love the First Flight Adventure Park, which is two blocks away, while your pup can howl with fun at Nags Head Dog Park, about a 12-minute drive north. Meanwhile, you’ll take to the chill vibes of the Tar Heel Motel like a fish to water, playing horseshoes and cornhole or strolling across the street to the beach.

7. Swell Motel

You’ll have a good time enjoying the outdoor activities at the Swell Motel. Access to surfing, kiteboarding, skateboarding and more is right outside your pet-friendly room. What’s more, you can explore the island via the free kayaks or bicycles at the hotel. Back at base, reel in a bluefish, cook it up on the grill and dig in together while watching the sunset.

8. Cameron House Next Door

You and your labradoodle will live like kings in the two-story Sandpiper room at the Cameron House Next Door. If privacy is your pup’s preference, the separate entrance will provide seclusion – and an upstairs bedroom with a private bathroom gives you a moment of peace from the dog, the kids or anyone else you have with you. When you want to head outside, explore Roanoke Island Festival Park, which has some dog-friendly areas.
