A Nature Lover's Guide to the South of Albania
Albania is a paradise for nature-lovers with evocative panoramas, untouched lands and diverse habitats. Considered one of last unspoiled destinations of Europe, Albania, despite its small size, has plenty of natural heritages and is a must-see country for adventurous people. Here’s a list of the various experiences and sites for nature lovers who are visiting Albania.
Llogara, Vlora
The Llogara Pass, a picturesque mountain pass that offers breathtaking views over the turquoise waters of Ionian Sea, connects Vlora, the third-largest city of Albania, with the Albanian Riviera, the most incredible place to visit in the country. This spectacular winding mountain road was built in 1920 and is the most scenic venue of Albania as well as the start point to explore the Riviera. Near the pass, there is the National Park of Llogara, a wild area used for hiking and as an alpine retreat. The park is one of the most attractive nature destinations of Albania, with a vibrant flora and over 100 different types of animals, such as deer, foxes, wild cats and various birds. From the Llogara National Park, visitors have the opportunity to admire wild nature and amazing views over the sea.
The south of Albania is a gorgeous place to set up camp. We strongly suggest you avoid the peak of the season (from the beginning of July to the end of August) because it gets too busy. Come in June or September, when days are still sunny, but places aren’t crowded. One of the best places to wild camp in Albania is Drymades, the most enchanting beach of the Riviera, located near the old village of Dhërmi. Light a fire, grill some fresh fish, chat with other visitors and enjoy one of the most beautiful places you’ll see in Europe.
Osumi Canyon
The best places for adventurous to visit in Albania is Osumi Canyon, a river canyon located near the town of Çorodova. The river Osumi, which passes through the enchanting historical town of Berat, declared world heritage by Unesco, flows through the canyon. Throughout the length of the canyon there are hidden several secret passages as well as unexplored caves, so it’s not difficult to understand why this place is so loved by nature-fans. One of the best things to do here is to take part to one of the rafting trip organized by Outdoor Albania, a great way to explore the river and have a lot of fun.
Korça and Surroundings
Mostly known to be the cultural hub of the country (with Shkodra, the main northern town), Korça is also the perfect place to explore great natural places located in the southeast of Albania. The town is surrounded by ancient and lovely hamlets, such as Voskopja, Dardha, Vithkuqi and Boboshtica, which offer visitors the possibility to practice many outdoor sports and activities. If you love lakes, you need to know that with just one hour from Korça you can reach three of the oldest lakes of Europe, Ohrid, Great Prespa and Small Prespa. These three lakes are paradise for nature lovers, with several wild animals and endemic species of fish.
