There’s a craft beer revolution underway in Hong Kong, with new taprooms and gastropubs popping up left and right. These aren’t just imports, either — a wave of local, independent breweries is putting Hong Kong-brewed beers on the map. To hop onto this burgeoning movement, check out some of our favorite venues for unusual and artisanal beers in Hong Kong.

1. The Ale Project

Bar, Restaurant, Chinese

This Mongkok craft beer bar has both local and imported brews on tap, with a special focus on the local brewery Young Master Ales. It’s an adorable industrial taproom with colorful wooden stools and blue brick walls, and there’s a great selection of sandwiches and nibbles, including fries, mac n’ cheese, and pork belly nachos.

2. The Roundhouse Taproom

Bar, BBQ, Beer

Owned by Austen Fry, a Texas native, this SoHo sports bar is a hipster hangout that’s been around since 2013. The taps here dispense 25 different craft beers from around the world, including exclusive brews that you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere. There’s also a delectable selection of Texas-style barbecue, including pulled pork, brisket, and sausage.

3. Crafty Cow

Gastropub, Restaurant, Pub Grub

This snug gastropub in PoHo boasts a great selection of craft brews to accompany your meal, including red ales, pilsners, IPAs, and stouts from NZ, Japan, Belgium, Australia, the U.S., and more. On the menu are eclectic fusion eats such as a Chipotle oxtail stew, a foie gras duck poutine, and truffle grilled cheese. It’s bound to appeal to craft beer connoisseurs.

4. Peel

Bar, Restaurant, Chinese, Seafood

This international seafood restaurant occupies a spacious industrial venue, complete with concrete walls and neon signage at the entrance. The beer menu features 12 independent Hong Kong breweries, including Kowloon Bay Brewery, Moonzen, Mak’s Brewery, and Lion Rock Brewery. Pair your pint with tasty bar snacks including prawn and Iberico prawn wontons, deep-fried prawns, seared scallops, and more.

5. The Bottle Shop

Bar, Bodega, Wine Seller, Pub Grub, Wine, Beer, Cocktails

Established in 2012 — a relative old-timer in Hong Kong’s craft beer game — this Sai Kung store’s shelves are stocked with hundreds of locally and internationally sourced beers arranged and labelled by flavor and origin. They also own a café and bar in Central, with 20 craft brews on tap. The café pairs craft beer with brunch and dinner and specializes in matching sudsy beer flavors with the perfect meal.

6. Craft Brew & Co.

Bar, Restaurant, Beer

This industrial chic beer joint was founded in 2012, and serves about 15 beers on tap, including pints from Hong Kong Beer Co and Holgate Brewhouse, as well as their own in-house brews. The exposed brick and blond wood tables make for a classic hipster joint. On the menu is a selection of laksa noodles as well as unusual gourmet sausages made from crocodile, cobra, and rabbit — but if that’s not your thing, pork is available too.

7. Little Creatures

Gastropub, Pub Grub

These famous brewers originating from Perth, Australia caused a stir when they set up shop in the up-and-coming hipster neighborhood of Kennedy Town. Little Creatures beer is brewed on site, including their signature Pale Ale, their hoppy Original Pilsner, and their malty Rogers Beer. If you get hungry, don’t hesitate to take advantage of the healthy menu of salads, sandwiches, and brunch items.
