The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is often described as “the other Costa Rica.” This gorgeous region has a totally unique vibe. The culture, beaches, flavors, infrastructure, and activities are quite different than what you find on the other side of the country. The opportunity to explore both sides is a real treat, but if you only have 10 days, here’s what to do on the Caribbean coast.

Day 1

Fly into the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose. Take a Sansa flight from San Jose to Limon. Almonds and Corals, Hotel Banana Azul, and Selva Bananito Lodge are all exceptional boutique hotels to stay at while in the Southern Caribbean area.

Day 3

Go snorkeling. The Cahuita National Park is home to some of the most incredible coral reefs on the Caribbean coast. There is great snorkeling in the Gandoca-Manzanilla Wildlife Refuge, as well. Around 500 species of tropical fish make their home in these reefs. You must snorkel with a certified guide, but it is definitely worth it!

Keep your eyes open for manatees

Day 4

Visit the Sloth Sanctuary. It is located between Limon and Cahuita and is home to sick, injured, and abandoned sloths. Taking the Buttercup Tour or the Insider’s Tour will melt your heart. Sloths are some of the most adorable and docile mammals on Earth and are indigenous to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. This will definitely be a hit with the animal lovers in your group.

Day 5

Take a chocolate tour. The Caribbean region is famous for its chocolate and taking a chocolate tour is both delicious and educational. You will walk through a beautiful cacao farm, learn about the fascinating history and production of this worldwide favorite treat, and find out how cacao is turned into chocolate.

Day 6

Have a bike, beach, and booze day. The Caribbean coastline is flat and ideal for biking. After several days of adventuring and touring, a mellow beach and biking day is in order. You can cruise along the coastline, swim in the crystal-clear ocean, lounge beneath the palm trees, and end up in Puerto Viejo for happy hour and a night on the town.

Days 7, 8, and 9

Fly south. Fly Sansa from Limon to Tortuguero. You can access Tortuguero only by small plane or boat. It is the remoteness that makes this northern part of the Caribbean so magical. Tortuguero is famous for its national park, abundance and variety of birds, and sea turtles. While you are in Tortuguero, you should take a guided hike through the Tortuguero National Park, go on a birdwatching tour, and take a boat tour (kayak, canoe, or small motorized boat) through the Tortuguero canals and wetlands. Mawamba Lodge and Tortuga Lodge and Gardens are two amazing accommodation choices.

Day 10

Fly Sansa from Tortuguero back to the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
