Home to the oldest public library in the Americas, Puebla is a book lover’s dream, offering abundant literary history and numerous reading options. While some bookstores in the town focus on textbooks and educational material, others are perfect for working, enjoying casual read, or sipping a coffee. Here are some independent bookstores where you can find a bit of everything.

1. Profetica Bookstore

The Profetica Casa de la Lectura (House of Reading) was a colonial gem in a state of almost complete ruin until it was rescued and renovated by architect Gonzalo Goméz Palacio. Now it’s considered one of the most impressive bookstores in the city. You’ll find an expansive range of books, a courtyard with ferry lights and exposed brick, and a cafe with numerous treats. The Casa also hosts author readings, book signings, and other literary events.

2. Librería Leon

For the past fifty years, Librería Leon has invited readers to discover and interact with the books on their shelves. The store hosts book presentations, book festivals, and author readings and signings on a regular basis. Visitors can find many textbooks and instruction manuals, as well as popular literature and non-fiction like self-help, science, sports, entertainment, and nature books.

3. Complex Librería Del Complejo Cultural Universitario (BUAP)

The BUAP university bookstore boasts a catalogue of over 21,000 books. They also manage to squeeze in CDs, DVDs, a children’s area with books and toys, and a reading room. From major publishing houses to university presses, this shop has you covered. Get your fill of law, philosophy, politics, poetry, or leisurely peruse their national and international film selection.

A cozy location to cuddle up with a coffee and favorite page-turner, Libros & Libros has been in business for over 15 years in downtown Puebla. You’ll know you’re in good company when you spot their motto, “You are what you read.” The shop has a few sturdy tables for serious pursuits as well as comfy leather chairs to curl up in.

6. Librería Ditesa

Housed in a classic colonial building in the heart of Puebla, Ditesa offers any book you might need from grade school textbooks, academia, science fiction and romance, or children’s books.
