Cuba isn’t known known for being a particularly good place for vegetarians, but things are improving as more and more private restaurants, known as paladars, open up. Here are some of the best restaurants serving vegetarian food for you to check out in the Cuban capital of Havana.

1. Oasis Nelva Café Creperie, Old Havana

This small creperie sits above a handicrafts shop and serves crepes and smoothies. Everything is cooked with olive oil, and it’s a good spot for veggies who want to grab a quick bite. It’s a relaxed little place and it’s well worth stopping in.

2. Azucar Lounge, Old Havana

Restaurant, Fusion, Pub Grub, Cuban

While not exclusively vegetarian, there are lots of good veggie options on the menu here. Vegans are also catered for. You can get falafel, pesto pasta and grilled vegetables, among other dishes. It’s on Plaza Vieja in Old Havana, and the location means that it’s fairly pricey.

3. Buena Vista Curry Club

Restaurant, Indian, Vegetarian, Vegan, Cuban

This is an Indian restaurant with some vegetarian and vegan options, which is a real rarity in Cuba. If you want to get your curry fix, this is the place to be. On longer trips to the island, you will be happy to find a restaurant with spicy food!

5. Topoly

Restaurant, Middle Eastern, Vegetarian, Vegan, Cuban

An Iranian restaurant with an amazing wraparound terrace, this place is great for vegetarians and vegans. The staff are great and it’s a great spot to sit and watch people in the park next door. Slightly more expensive than the average, but worth it.

6. La Rosa Negra

Restaurant, Cuban, Vegan, Vegetarian

This traditional Cuban restaurant serves up old favourites, but all cooked without meat fat. There are good options for vegans and vegetarians, and a wide selection of cocktails for everyone.

7. O'Reilly 304

Bar, Cocktail Bar, Tapas, Pub Grub, Cuban

A trendy cocktail and tapas bar in Old Havana, O’Reilly 304 has earned rave reviews for its veggie-friendly menu and its gin cocktails. It wouldn’t be out of place in any major US or European city, and you’d be remiss not to make a visit.
