Being the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. is a cultural melting pot, housing people from across the globe. Bold Latin American culture exists throughout the District, and a prominent Caribbean neighborhood resides on Georgia Avenue. Plenty of mouthwatering authentic Caribbean eateries await, if you know where to look.

1. Sandovan Restaurant & Lounge

Restaurant, Caribbean, American

Sandovan’s Jamaican, home-style cooking uses some spicy flavors. Lots of them. The menu’s highlights include jerk chicken, goat curry, and plantains. We recommend pairing any of the flavorful dishes with some very alcoholic rum punch. The casual restaurant digs make for a relaxed, appetizing evening.

2. Andrene’s Caribbean & Soul Food Carryout

Andrene’s Caribbean & Soul Food Carryout

The casual Jamaican eatery will delight your palette with the best, authentic oxtails on the east coast. A really nice touch is that you’ll likely be personally greeted by Andrene herself. The small business makes you feel welcome, and it’s easy to quickly be acquainted with the whole friendly staff. Andrene’s has been operating in the same location for a decade; its adored for the hearty portions and fresh ingredients.

3. Mi Cuba Cafe

Cafe, Restaurant, Cuban, American

The bright decor and wealth of plants create a cheery ambiance that radiates authentic Latin American vibes. The homemade Cuba dishes are almost as colorful as the cafe’s interior. When you sit down you’ll be given some complementary toasted Cuban bread, which gets everything off to a great start. Entree favorites include the grilled chicken and steak – tender with the right amount of grease. And it wouldn’t be true Caribbean food if every meal didn’t come with an optional side of rice and beans.

5. Los Hermanos

Bistro, Dominican

The Dominican fast-casual bistro is the hidden gem of Columbia Heights; the hole-in-the-wall exterior makes it easy to miss, but the food is anything but forgettable. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor frequents here – she clearly knows what’s good. The most popular feature is the make your own dish – selecting a grain base, meat, spices, and a side. While there, you simply must try the $2 passionfruit juice.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
