Miami offers a wide variety of first-class options for both vegans and vegetarians. Discover decadent dishes, sweet treats and inventive cocktails with this guide to all things plant-based in the city.

Planta

Located in the heart of South Beach, Planta is the most popular vegan restaurant in Miami. Using herbs, microgreens and vegetables hand-picked from its rooftop garden, its plant-based menu offers innovative versions of contemporary cuisine. Among the favorites is the Bianca – a wood-fired white pizza with cauliflower, rosemary potatoes and cashew mozzarella. If you’re feeling indulgent, add shaved black truffle for an extra $12. With uniquely crafted beverages such as the kombucha mojito, activated charcoal bourbon and aloe vera gin, dinner cocktails are as much of a draw as the dishes. Pro tip: booking a table in advance is advisable on evenings and weekends.

Bunnie Cakes

Bunnie Cakes is vegan heaven. At this charming vegan sweet shop, located in Wynwood, you can try over 17 different styles of cupcakes, as well as brownies, cookies and donuts. Vanilla filled with chocolate, cinnamon sugar and key lime are just a few of the cupcakes on offer here, and all varieties are made with coconut milk, soy butter and evaporated cane juice. If savory is more your style, try the freshly baked pizza rolls or empanadas, or choose from a vegan sandwiches such as the caprese with vegan mozzarella. For something a little different, try the DIY cake and cupcake-decorating class or tutorial and bring home your own unique creation.

Soul Tavern

Appealing to both the health-conscious and the self-proclaimed foodie, Soul Tavern is the first plant-based gastropub in Miami. Located in the Sunset Harbour neighborhood, this spot serves vegetarian and vegan comfort food. Dine alfresco in the Zen patio or slide up to the bar and enjoy local brews. With shareable dishes such as the truffle mac and cheese, pulled jackfruit tacos and house-made gnocchi with macadamia nut crema, bring a friend and sample as many flavors as you like. In keeping with the healthy theme, there are also virgin cocktails and a full elixir bar for non-alcohol drinks to help detox, nourish and balance the mind.

Screaming Carrots

Just north of Miami Beach, Screaming Carrots is helping normalize veganism. The casual setting emphasizes this restaurant’s focus on authentic tasting all-organic vegan food. An extensive menu features everything from a chickpea omelet to a schnitzel sandwich made with in-house Mediterranean chili and greens. Thai-style massaman curry and Spanish paella with tofu and saffron showcase a flare for international flavors, too. Other items include a variety of fresh smoothie bowls, smoothies, cold-pressed juices and desserts such as gluten-free red velvet cake, brownies and fruit popsicles.

Full Bloom

Full Bloom is vegan fine dining at its best. Located directly in the heart of South Beach, the intimate setting is perfect for a special occasion, date night or quietly catching up with friends. Wholesome and hearty dishes such as spaghetti carbonara (spelt pasta with cashew cream and shiitake bacon) and the Full Bloom ravioli (filled with kale, spinach and cashew ricotta) pair perfectly with a glass of red wine. Or, drop in during lunchtime for a mock tuna sandwich (walnut celery pâté, seaweed and avocado) and a creamy turmeric kale salad. For those who are especially health-conscious, try the raw green tacos (collard green shell with walnut pâté) or the raw pad thai (kelp noodles, veggies and almond butter sauce).

Treelion

Found in the West Park neighborhood, Treelion serves homestyle Jamaican cuisine that is all vegetarian (with plenty of vegan options) in a quaint and colorful setting. If you’re struggling to find the restaurant, just look for the large Jamaican flag waving out front and a line of people patiently waiting to be served hearty plates of soul-pleasing Ital food. Fried plantains, veggie ‘salt fish,’ and callaloo and ackee are among a wide variety of dishes offered daily. Prices are budget-friendly, with a $6 breakfast (chef’s choice-of-the-day porridge bowl) and a $6 boxed lunch special (available Monday through Friday until 3pm).

Joseph’s Organic Bakery

Joseph’s in North Miami is an organic, vegan, kosher and gluten-free bakery specializing in stone-ground bread and pastries. From olive kamut rolls to sun-dried tomato loaves, all bread is baked fresh daily and sweetened using organic maple syrup. With a mouth-watering array of cakes (including chocolate and marble), pies (such as apple, cherry and blueberry) and cookies like the chocolate-chip cookie with cocoa nibs, you can indulge your sweet tooth without any guilt. Organic sandwiches, vegan empanadas and gourmet pizzas topped with a home-made vegan cheese make Joseph’s an ideal stop for breakfast or for a quick lunch while shopping.

Love Life Café

This bright café located in Wynwood serves fresh vegan cuisine with a positive message. From its variety of arepas and stone-fired pizzas to a Cuban burrito with plantains and cashew sour cream, the menu at Love Life Café is expansive. Stop in for breakfast and try the egg and cheese croissanwich with golden potato herb fries or the gluten-free pancakes with your choice of blueberry, strawberry or banana toppings. The award-winning veggie burger will delight even the most devoted meat lover. For those on the go, pop next door to the sister coffee shop offering a selection of dairy-free milk, specialty lattes such as turmeric and lavender, plus organic teas.
