Business travellers come to Pasay in the Philippines for the PICC and SMX convention centres; families come for fairground rides at Star City and SM by the Bay; and shopaholics descend upon the gargantuan SM Mall of Asia – with an Olympic-size ice rink, bay-view restaurants and weekend firework displays. Whatever draws you in, there are many excellent hotels in Pasay to use as a base for your adventure.

1. TRYP by Wyndham Mall of Asia Manila

The smart, air-conditioned units range from the studio deluxe with two single beds and a microwave oven to the one-bedroom premier with a full kitchen and washer-dryer. This being the Philippines, rice cookers are available upon request. There’s also an all-day restaurant, swimming pool and fitness centre on site.

4. Conrad Manila

Looking like a great white ship jutting out into Manila Bay, this member of the Hilton family is part of the S Maison retail complex, home to several international chains and a couple of quirky museums. Rooms have views of the bay and come with hydrotherapy rain showers, espresso machines and bluetooth speakers. Work out in the fitness centre or try Chinese cuisine at China Blue. The SMX Convention Center and SM Mall of Asia are also next door.
