Smarket is a new night food market in Durban’s revamped Rivertown Precinct. It’s set in a warehouse that’s part of an urban regeneration strategy, in collaboration with local architects, designers and innovators, and it brings an eclectic mix of tastes to Durban’s shores. Every second Friday of the month you can look forward to a diverse range of foods like Middle Eastern kanafehs (a sweet, cheese-based pastry), ice cream scrolls, giant gourmet eclairs, paneer tikkas and cheeseburgers.

While I ♥ Market also sells vintage items and crafts, its food section draws a large crowd. For those who make it in time for breakfast, there are scrambled eggs and delicious vegan burgers, and for the more peckish, there are dumplings and chicken burgers. You’ll also find a fresh fruit stand, where you can get piña coladas that are so good you have to go back for more, and homemade fruit ice creams for the kids. It’s open on the first Saturday of every month.
