Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, boasts some of the most scenic villages in the country. With four distinct seasons, hilly landscapes and colorful vegetation, it’s no wonder the island has become a hugely popular tourist destination. Here are some of the most majestic towns in Hokkaido.

Biei

A farming town known for its rolling hills and fields of flowers, Biei is often used as the backdrop for TV commercials and dramas. The best way to explore the natural sights and sounds of the village is by renting a bicycle once you arrive. Be sure to check out the “Patchwork Road”, a wide field area where the flowers are grown in alternating colors.

Shibetsu

Famous for rolling hills, sheep farming and fishing, this eastern town is sure to satisfy the outdoorsy traveler. The landscape here is a far cry from the crowded, condensed metropolitan areas of Japan. If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of cities like Tokyo and Osaka, this is the place for you.

Tsurui

The main attraction of this small village is Kushiro Marsh, a massive wetland which is home to over 2,000 different plant and animal species. Visitors can view wildlife from the various observation points scattered throughout the hills surrounding the marsh. Most travelers go to Tsurui in hopes of spotting the Hokkaido deer or the Tancho, a rare Japanese crane.

Kyogoku

This small town sits near the base of Mt. Yotei, an active volcano bubbling with hot spring water. Said to have healing properties, tourists frequently visit the nearby Fukudashii Park to drink the water in hopes of curing their ailments and injuries. True or not, the view of the mountain alone is reason enough to add Kyogoku to your list.
