This historic 18th-century property is a good-looking spot with its pink stone buildings and wedding-cake white tiered roofs. Comfortably furnished suites overlook the blue expanse of Hamilton Harbour and the courtyard freshwater pool. You’re a short walk to the ferry terminal, which makes hopping around the island a breeze. Be sure to book a table at the fancy Fourways Restaurant. Their local fisherman delivers his catch each day, and herbs are grown in the garden. There’s even a resident pianist who plays nightly in the dining room.

Separate living and dining rooms, soft leather furniture and sleek modern kitchens keep things feeling homey – even if the weather is better than where you usually live. Private verandas mean blue ocean views, and you’re just a seven-minute ferry ride from downtown Hamilton. Top restaurants within walking distance include Blu Bar and Fourways Restaurant.

This resort is an excellent option on the west side for families, skirting 8 acres (3.2ha) of coastline with access to two soft-sand beaches. Look for the sea turtles who make the private cove their home. Then head to Ocean Beach for sunbathing, snorkelling – the hotel provides the equipment free of charge – and gorgeous sunset views. In addition, scooter and bike rentals are available to explore the dozens of other spectacular beaches that dot the island. Choose ocean or garden views – all are styled with cool white tiles, pretty floral fabrics and framed coastal-themed art.

Live like a local at these pretty, yellow and white apartments in a quiet neighbourhood in the north of the island. Well-stocked kitchens and private outdoor areas keep things homey, as does the fact that pets are welcome. Head to nearby Admiralty House Park, and join the locals for cliff jumping. The park is also home to Lemon and Ginger’s vibrant yellow Beach Hut, where everyone heads for cold drinks, snow cones and home-made treats.

5. Bermuda Villa Guest House, for laid-back living close to Darrell’s Wharf

Simple but charming, furnished with wooden pieces and the odd chandelier, Bermuda Villa Guest House is the perfect choice for exploring Hamilton – Darrell’s Wharf ferry stop is a four-minute walk from the property. Be sure to stop by the Birdcage, a waterfront rooftop bar in Hamilton, to try their signature drink, Hey Bird. The recipe is a closely guarded secret, but rumour has it there’s a bit of rum involved. Come morning, wake up as you sip a coffee on the patio among the palm trees waving in the coastal breeze.
