San Juan, the vibrant capital of Puerto Rico, is rich in historical relics from the Spanish colonial era, such as mighty harbor forts and the beautiful terraces of the Old Town – but it’s also a modern city with a buzzing nightlife and superb restaurants. Budget-friendly doesn’t necessarily mean a compromise on luxury; from colonial heritage to modern upscale stays, here are the best.

1. Best Western Plus Condado Palm Inn & Suites

A Best Western can always be relied upon for a comfortable, professional stay, and this one lives up to the billing. There’s a retro-style outdoor pool flanked by sun loungers and palm trees, an entertainment area stocked with board games in the lobby and complimentary continental breakfast. There’s also free bikes you can borrow for 24 hours to explore your surroundings.

2. Holiday Inn Express San Juan Condado

There are few more reliable hotel chains than Holiday Inn, long a benchmark for comfort and quality – and this property, by the beach on the Peninsula de Condado, is no exception. Rooms have a contemporary feel, with rustic touches in the extensive use of wood, and the outdoor pool is the perfect place to cool off. Condado beach, great for swimming and sunbathing, is just a stone’s throw away.

As the name suggests, this hotel overlooks the Laguna del Condado, but it’s equally well placed for visiting the beach on the other side and the historic delights of Old San Juan. Rooms have a traditional feel, and the exclusive Penthouse Suite, with a kitchenette and furnished terrace, affords views over the lagoon. The hotel sits next to the Ventana al Mar park, which has lovely views out to the sea.

6. La Terraza de San Juan

This charming boutique hotel is housed in an old Spanish colonial building, and pays homage to its heritage in the decor of the guest rooms; each is different, but they all contain decorative touches such as woven rugs, wooden shutters and unique artworks, which add up to a cozy farmhouse-style atmosphere. The hotel sits in the heart of Old San Juan, and overlooks the historic surroundings from a breezy roof terrace.
