It’s a quintessentially English thing to flock to a beer garden as soon as there’s any sight of the sun – because it doesn’t appear that often! Whether you’re looking to kick back on a bank holiday or take advantage of the English rarity that is sun, here are some of the best beer gardens and terraces in Newcastle upon Tyne.

1. Barluga

Barluga‘s outdoor terrace is one of the best in Newcastle and with a recent £180,000 extension and makeover, it’s got even better! Grab a cocktail, head outside in the summer months and you could be forgiven for thinking that you’re on an exotic holiday.

Not your typical beer garden as such, As You Like It’s outdoor terrace offers something unique with its private, lofty garden. The terrace is part of As You Like It’s many rooms and is available to hire with your own bar, waiting staff and secluded space.

3. The Tyne Bar

One of Newcastle’s self-proclaimed ‘best kept secrets’, The Tyne Bar can be found beneath the redbrick arch of Glasshouse Bridge. You won’t need to worry about the elements here as part of the garden is sheltered by the bridge, making a beer in the rain a perfectly acceptable thing.

4. Pitcher & Piano

Bar, Pub, Contemporary, Pub Grub

In one of the most picturesque spots in the city, Pitcher & Piano offers superb views across the Quayside. With a couple of outdoor terraces that directly face the River Tyne, you’ll be hard-pushed to find a better spot for summer relaxing with a glass of wine.

5. Bonbar

Bar, Cocktail Bar, Contemporary, Pub Grub

Another central Newcastle venue with a recently refurbished terrace area, Bonbar is one of the city’s finest restaurants and late night bars. A favourite with celebrities including Little Mix, Bonbar’s outdoor seating area is well covered so there’s no need to worry about the rain ruining an afternoon tipple!

6. The Botanist

Bar, Pub, Contemporary, Pub Grub

Newcastle is a popular location in The Botanist’s ever growing arm of bars – with one of the strings to its impressive bow being a roof terrace! Set in the top two floors of Newcastle’s bustling Monument Mall, its rooftop terrace boasts a bar, table service and stunning views of the city to boot.
