It’s world-famous for its thundering falls, over which more than 3,000 tons of water gush every single second. But there’s more than natural wonders to amaze visitors to Niagara Falls. You’re near one of Canada’s finest wine regions – the Niagara Peninsula – and picture-perfect town Niagara-on-the-Lake, with its Victorian-style buildings. What’s more, with its restaurants, attractions and casino, Niagara Falls itself has a bit of a Vegas-gone-north vibe to it that can be a load of fun. Read our guide on which bed and breakfast to pick in Niagara Falls.

A short stroll from Rainbow Bridge – the arch across the Niagara River Gorge that connects Canada to the US – Acacia has an agreeable, old-world feel with its double-decker porches and brick-fronted exterior. Rooms are traditionally styled, with color-pop bedspreads and, in many cases, spacious bathtubs made for indolent mornings. The Covington Room even comes with its own private balcony area, perfect for sipping a sundowner al fresco while making plans for your night out in Niagara’s nearby downtown.

2. Serene Niagara Inn

Five bright rooms – dressed in clean whites and named after local trees – fill this 1908-built B&B, overlooking the Niagara Gorge where Canada meets the US. Perfect for couples, all the rooms sleep two and have little seating areas where you can relax or catch up on reading. The bloom-filled front garden is a highlight, as is the shared lounge area with its cushy leather sofa and TV.

It’s right on the busy Niagara Parkway, yet Redwood has a view out to a thicket of trees, lining the banks of the Niagara Gorge. With its hefty wooden staircase, landscaped gardens and art-splashed walls, the owners have done justice to the early 1900s architecture – while expertly integrating more eccentric touches such as Moroccan-style lanterns and potted plants. Don’t miss the organic breakfasts, served up in the atmospheric formal dining room.

This imposing Tudor-style inn, overlooking the Niagara River rapids on the American side of the falls, looks as if it was airlifted in from Stratford-upon-Avon – built in 1923, it’s apparently modeled after an actual English inn. Beamed ceilings and blazing hearths impart a homely, historic feel throughout the public areas, while bedrooms keep up the time-warped, transatlantic theme with four-posters, floral-print bedspreads and authentic paintings.
