San Francisco’s Mexican food isn’t really like any other Mexican food out there. Combining tradition with creative thinking, the Mexican food in SF touches every satisfying and tasty base. There are countless restaurants, food trucks, and outposts serving up some great Mexican fare. But honestly, some are just more delicious than others. Here’s our list of the best of the best Mexican food in San Francisco.

1. Tacorgasmico

Restaurant, Mexican

With a name like that, how can you not be curious to check this place out? Tacorgasmico is a casual, no-frills space with cozy tables. The beautiful mural complements the wonderful Mexican fare served here. It’s hard to choose the best dish here as it’s all so tasty. Make sure to order a round of yummy sangria to accompany the food.

2. Gracias Madre

Gracias Madre is doing the planet good at this sustainable and organic restaurant. The wood décor, communal tables, and long bar will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a Mexican village. And vegans, rejoice! The whole menu is vegan at Gracias Madre! That’s right. Vegan cheese nachos! The entire menu is seasonal, and dependent on what is available at their organic farm, Be Love Farm, in Pleasants Valley, California. All cheeses and milk come from nuts and the tortillas are handmade. Gracias Madre is an innovative Mexican place that still pays homage to its ancestral roots.

3. Street Taco

Restaurant, Mexican

Street Taco’s menu is simple but divine. This small and modern counter-serve place offers classic Mexican street food. All the ingredients are fresh and tasty, and the service is quick and friendly. This is definitely one of the best places this side of Mexico to get delicious Mexican street food and icy cold draft beer.

4. Tacolicious

Restaurant, Mexican

The delicious food, fun atmosphere, and serious margaritas will never disappoint. Located in the Mission, Tacolicious provides some of the best of the best tacos, small plates and, of course, tequila. Make sure to get here early as it gets packed, even on a weeknight. Between the bar, incredible Mexican fare, and the music, it’s no wonder Tacolicious remains a popular local favorite.

5. Don Pistos

Restaurant, Mexican

Perfect for everyone from the lone eater to lively groups looking for a space to celebrate. The exposed brick of Don Pistos adds to the lively atmosphere. This is a popular spot for yummy Mexican specialties with added twists, such as lobster street tacos and the infamous house guacamole. Don Pistos’ staff is always welcoming and knows how to recommend the best for your palate. The Sunday brunch held every week is also something everyone in San Francisco should experience.
