Scrapple

The Grill at Great Bridge

Opened in 1993 by husband and wife team Gary and Ann Pyle, The Grill at Great Bridge is a neighborhood diner through-and-through. Despite its laidback atmosphere and cozy dining room, the Pyles take their food very seriously. They only use meat from local butchers, and Ann bakes all of the diner’s pastries herself. Because of their commitment to serving the best food possible, The Grill at Great Bridge has won numerous awards, including a “Best of Chesapeake” award for best breakfast. This diner mainly sticks to classics like omelets and French toast. If you’re feeling adventurous, order the scrapple, a local pork product, to go with your eggs.

Angie’s Family Eatery

Located in the heart of Chesapeake, Angie’s Family Eatery, like The Grill at Great Bridge, is a family operation. First opened in 1994, this family-friendly diner has continuously served homemade dishes with a distinctly American flair at very reasonable prices. Breakfast is served between 7 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. everyday. Try their distinctly Southern country ham served with two eggs, toast and hand-cut fries or grits, which pays homage to the local cuisine. Alternatively, try one of the restaurant’s spins on the classic omelet, like the “Greek”, which comes with tomatoes, onions and feta cheese.

Rainbow sprinkle donut

Amazing Glazed

When a couple of Chesapeake natives got together and decided that there was nothing quite as good as a hot, freshly made donut covered in frozen custard, Amazing Glazed was born. Situated in the Great Bridge community, this donut shop specializes in everything sweet. It offers patrons a wide selection of donuts, custards, gelatos (Italian-style ice cream) and sorbets all made daily in-house. Stop by in the morning for a cheap breakfast on the go. You can completely customize you entire donut experience, choosing everything from the cake flavor to the drizzle to finish off your creation.

Bergey’s Breadbasket

Located on the outskirts of Chesapeake, Bergey’s Breadbasket is a working farm and creamery run by the Bergey family that sells its fresh products right from the source. On a hot summer’s day, indulging in their home-made ice cream is the perfect way to combat the Virginia heat. However, for an amazing breakfast, check out the farm’s bakery. All products, including the bread, giant cookies and pies, are made from scratch everyday. For a quick but decadent meal, order one of the Bergey’s homemade cinnamon rolls slathered with frosting and a cup of coffee.

Sunrise Breakfast Shoppe

Located in the heart of Chesapeake, Sunrise Breakfast Shoppe serves a mixture of American, Filipino and Hawaiian-style breakfasts all day. Don’t be deterred by the stripped-down exterior or that fact that it’s in a shopping center. A delicious breakfast or brunch experience awaits inside. Try the Filipino breakfast with tocino (uncured bacon), eggs and fried rice for a glimpse into what breakfast is like halfway around the world. Just be prepared to wait because Sunrise is consistently busy, especially in the morning.
